The EU urges Iran to contribute to reducing tensions on the Lebanon-Israel border

BRUSSELS, June 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, has asked the Iranian Government to contribute to reducing tensions on the border between Lebanon and Israel, the scene of practically constant cross attacks between Israeli forces and the Shiite militia Hezbollah, an ally of Tehran.

Borrell spoke by phone this Friday with the acting Foreign Minister of Iran, Ali Bagheri Kani, with an eye on “the dangerous increase in tensions on the Blue Line”, which separates Israeli and Lebanese territories.

“All actors must exercise maximum restraint and prevent new tensions,” the head of European diplomacy stressed on his social networks, calling for “avoiding the risk of a bigger war in the region.”

The tension in the area has been palpable since October 2023, after Hezbollah resumed attacks against Israel following the attacks carried out by the Palestinian movement Hamas. Violence has increased in recent weeks and Israeli authorities have raised the possibility of a large-scale conflict.
