The EU unlocks 12.5 million in humanitarian aid in Myanmar and Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh

BRUSSELS, 7 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Commission has reported this Friday the release of an additional 12.5 million in humanitarian aid for the vulnerable population in Burma and for the Rohingya refugees who have fled the country to Bangladesh and other parts of the region.

Specifically, the largest item will go to the care of the Rohingya community in Bangladesh, with 7 million euros; followed by aid of 4.5 million for those most in need in Burma and a million euros more for displaced people in other parts of the region, such as Malaysia, Indonesia, India and Thailand.

The objective is to respond to the “most urgent needs” of a population with “difficulties” even “in accessing food or basic health care”, as explained in a statement by the Crisis Management Commissioner, Janez Lenarcic, who also He has specified that the aid will also contribute to “attenuate” the current lack of financing in the region.

Brussels points out the “alarm” for the food insecurity that occurs in the refugee camps due to the lack of financing that has led to a reduction in food rations distributed among the Rohingya refugee community in Bangladesh.

If more financial support is not obtained from the international community, the situation will be “unsustainable” next autumn, according to estimates by community services, which stress that the humanitarian situation is also worsening within Burma due to the advance of the conflict and the consequences of the cyclone. Mocha’ that hit the country last May.
