The European Union highlighted this Monday, coinciding with World Refugee Day, its role as the main donor of funds for this group, emphasizing that four million Ukrainians fleeing the war have been welcomed in the Member States.
On the occasion of World Refugee Day, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and the European Commission reiterate their commitment to continue being one of the main humanitarian and development donors. He also expresses his willingness to “redouble efforts” to ensure that the bloc “continues to be a place where refugees find protection and security.”
“Refugee journeys are often fraught with hardship and danger and thousands of them risk their lives crossing deserts and seas in the hope of a better future. The EU is committed to working on global action to prevent loss of life and offer orderly and safe pathways”, states the statement, which underlines the work underway for the new migration and asylum pact that consolidates resettlement and complementary pathways to expand admission places.
The European bloc recalls the situation in Afghanistan, Venezuela, Syria, Burma, Yemen, South Sudan, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan, as the main refugee crises in the world and which have humanitarian funds and basic assistance .
But he makes special mention of the situation of Ukrainian refugees, four million of whom are in the EU. “Member States receive under temporary protection some four million people from Ukraine, more than half of whom are women and children,” the statement said.
“The EU also provides protection and humanitarian aid to internally displaced persons in Ukraine, and we support Ukrainian refugees in the Republic of Moldova,” he adds.
