The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, highlighted this Sunday that the arrest warrant issued on Friday by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Russian President Vladimir Putin for the kidnapping of Ukrainian children is only “the beginning of the process”.

“The EU views the ICC decision as the beginning of the accountability process for Russian leaders to stand trial for the crimes and atrocities they are ordering, enabling and perpetrating in Ukraine,” Borrell’s office said in a statement.

Brussels recalls that this order is due to the “alleged crimes for the deportation and illegal transfer of minors in the context of the situation in Ukraine.”

“The European Union welcomes and encourages all efforts to ensure full accountability for war crimes and other serious crimes in connection with Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine,” Borrell said.

Finally, Brussels has expressed its support for the investigation of the CFI Prosecutor’s Office and calls for “full cooperation” from all the signatory States of the Treaty of Rome by which the court based in The Hague was created.
