The European Union (EU) has sent this Wednesday a fourth flight with 36 tons of materials for distribution in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), an area shaken by a serious humanitarian crisis and in which dozens of armed groups operate. , as confirmed by the European Commission.
The fourth flight of the EU Humanitarian Airlift left Europe today with 36 tonnes of goods to be delivered to our humanitarian partners on the ground, including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Save the Children. said, before specifying that this transport “marks the end of the first phase of the humanitarian airlift to Goma, organized with the support of France”.
“The four flights carried out since the beginning of March have transported a total of 140 tons of humanitarian aid to Goma, which will be distributed by our humanitarian partners to those most in need. More flights are expected in the coming weeks,” he said, before detailing that this airlift was established “before the dramatic deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the eastern DRC”.
In this sense, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, stressed that this humanitarian airlift “reaffirms the EU’s support for the most vulnerable in the country during this difficult period”. “We remain prepared to mobilize all means at our disposal to support our humanitarian partners on the ground by delivering vital aid to those who need it most,” he stressed.
According to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 26.4 million people need humanitarian aid in the country. The UN has requested 2,300 million dollars (about 2,105 million euros) to give aid this year, although it has only received 17.7 percent of the funds so far.
