The European Union has considered as “positive” the designation of a new president in Iraq, assuring that this step brings the formation of a government closer a year after the parliamentary elections.
“These are positive steps towards the long-awaited formation of a government, one year after the October 2021 elections for which the EU deployed an Electoral Observation Mission,” European diplomacy said in a statement.
In this sense, the EU urges Iraq to “quickly” form a government that can implement the reforms that are “urgently” needed and always “responding to the needs and aspirations of its people.”
The Iraqi Parliament on Thursday elected Abdelatif Rashid, candidate of the Democratic Party of Kurdistan, as the country’s new president after beating his rival, Barham Salí, in a secret vote that was held more than a year after the parliamentary elections. which took place in October 2021.
Rashid has given support to the pro-Iranian Shiite politician Mohamed Shiaa al Sudani, candidate for prime minister by the Coordination Framework coalition and rival of the religious cleric Muqtada Al Sadr, to form a new Executive in an attempt to unravel the country’s political landscape.
The vote to elect the new president took place in a tense environment, since at least two people were injured on Thursday due to the impact of several projectiles in the ‘Green Zone’ of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where the majority are located. of official buildings and foreign embassies.
In its statement, community diplomacy has condemned the rocket attacks recorded near Parliament. “Violence has no place in the democratic process and differences must be resolved peacefully through constructive dialogue within the constitutional framework,” he said.
