The EU renews one year sanctions against Turkish hydrocarbon exploration in the Mediterranean

BRUSSELS, Nov. 8 (EUROPE PRESS) –

The European Union has renewed this Tuesday for another year the sanctions regime in response to Turkey’s unauthorized hydrocarbon exploration activities in the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Through this mechanism, the European bloc can adopt sanctions against persons and entities involved in the exploration of hydrocarbons that the EU considers illegal as they occur in Greek and Cypriot territorial waters. This issue is at the heart of the disputes between the neighbors and poisoned the relations of the EU and Turkey at the end of 2020.

Currently two people remain on the blacklist and are subject to European sanctions, which include a travel ban to the EU and the freezing of assets in the European bloc.

Specifically, they are two leaders of the Turkish oil company TPAO, its vice president, Mehmet Akalin, and the deputy director of the Exploration department, Ali Coscun Namoglu.
