The European Commission announced this Thursday the release of an additional 15 million euros in humanitarian aid for the most vulnerable population in Burma and for those who have taken refuge in neighboring countries, including the Rohingya community displaced to Bangladesh.
“The conflict in Burma is having devastating humanitarian consequences for the population,” lamented the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, who recalled that they face multiple risks, from the serious food security crisis to limited access to essential health care. .
“In light of increasingly worrying information that speaks of violence against the civilian population, it is essential that all parties respect international humanitarian law,” added the commissioner, who referred especially to the particularly worrying situation in the state. of Rakhine.
For this reason, the commissioner has urged “all parties” to show restraint and “respect their obligations to protect the civilian population.” Since the 2021 coup d’état, the European Union has been increasing its humanitarian support every year until reaching 36 million euros in 2024, according to data provided by the Community Executive.
With the latest contribution, Brussels hopes to contribute to providing food, shelter, drinking water, emergency health care to the population, as well as helping to protect themselves from the most dangerous environment, for example by “reducing their exposure to the danger of landmines.”
