BRUSSELS, July 1 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The European Union has reiterated this Friday its “concerns” about “the withdrawal of fundamental freedoms” in Hong Kong, precisely when 25 years have passed since the transfer of sovereignty of this territory to Beijing by London.
“25 years ago, China committed itself, in an international treaty, to preserve Hong Kong’s high level of autonomy and respect the ‘one country, two systems’ principle until 2047,” a spokeswoman for the Hong Kong Foreign Action Service recalled. EU, Nabila Massrali, on Twitter.
The block considers that these last few years have represented a setback in terms of Human Rights in the former British territory, after Beijing gained influence and the Hong Kong authorities repressed any hint of social and political dissidence.
