The EU points out that a ceasefire in Sudan is "imperative and urgent"

BRUSSELS, May 12. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The European Union has indicated this Friday that a ceasefire is “imperative and urgent” in Sudan after the Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have signed a preliminary agreement to allow humanitarian passage and the protection of civilians. in the fighting areas.

In a statement, community diplomacy has insisted that the protection of civilians in the context of a conflict is already a “legally binding” premise for the belligerent parties according to the Geneva convention, so the value of the declaration “will depend whether the parties comply with it and improve the situation on the ground”.

Regarding the pact for a schedule of talks for a cessation of hostilities, the EU has declared that it is necessary to put an end to the clashes and the ceasefire is “imperative and urgent”. “While all efforts to stop the fighting are welcome, a sustainable ceasefire, rather than a timetable for it, is an urgent and overdue imperative,” the statement said.

The EU applauds the role of the US and Saudi Arabia in bringing the parties together in the Saudi city of Jeddah and insists that it will continue to work with international and regional partners to consolidate a mediation initiative that can result in a ceasefire and resume the Sudanese civil transition.

In this “preliminary agreement of principles” both parties to the conflict would have agreed to allow the passage of humanitarian aid, as well as to facilitate the movement of civilians fleeing from the hot zones of the confrontations to safer places.
