BRUSSELS, Sep. 2 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The European Union announced this Friday the opening of a delegation in Qatar, within the framework of its commitment to increase its diplomatic presence in the Gulf.
“This step marks a new stage in relations with Qatar, this reinforces the world presence and contributes to the strategic association with the Gulf”, indicated the EU External Action Service, which is directed by the High Representative, Josep Borrell.
With this office, the global number of EU delegations rises to 145. The initiative was promised on the occasion of one of Borrell’s trips to the country last year.
The EU seeks greater cooperation with the Gulf countries and, as an example, Borrell has traveled to the region on several occasions. Relations between the EU and Qatar are going through a good moment, also marked by the energy issue, since the Gulf State is a secure supplier of energy and because of its role in the Afghanistan crisis, both with the evacuation of Afghans and in diplomatic contacts with the Taliban.
