The EU insists on the cessation of hostilities in Sudan and asks external actors not to interfere in the crisis

STRASBOURG, (FRANCE) 17 (EUROPA PRESS)

The European Union has demanded this Monday the cessation of hostilities in Sudan, showing its support for the efforts underway to put an end to the crisis unleashed in the country after clashes between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, insisting that external actors must avoid any interference in the crisis.

“The message from the EU is clear: cessation of hostilities, de-escalation of the situation and respect for International Law and protection of civilians,” said the EU’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Nabila Massrali, at a press conference from the capital community.

In this sense, he has assured that the most important thing now is to guarantee the arrival of humanitarian aid and resume the political transition process, which has been derailed by the clashes between different factions of uniformed officers.

The EU supports all efforts that lead to a transition led by civilians, said Massrali, who has asked external actors “not to interfere” in the open crisis. In this regard, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has established contacts with the President of Kenya, William Rutto, and representatives of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates to discuss the situation in Sudan. Massrali has reported contacts at various levels with the United Nations, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and Saudi Arabia.

The clashes have broken out after weeks of tensions between the Army and the RSF in the framework of talks with civil organizations with a view to the formation of a new unity government that will return the country to the path of transition after the coup led by in October 2021 by the current head of the Army and president of the Sovereign Transition Council, Abdelfatá al Burhan.

Regarding the situation of the Europeans who can be found in Sudan, the spokesperson has indicated that there are around a hundred and has demanded that they follow the consular recommendations of their countries of origin in the EU.
