The EU does not congratulate Meloni while the European extreme right is chested by the Fratelli d'Italia

The European Union has received the victory of Giorgia Melonileader of the far-right party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy), with the absolute silence. Not even the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyennor the President of the Council, Charles Michel, have ruled on the results of the legislative elections in Italy, the third largest economy and founding country of the European Union.

Yes they did when the French president, Emmanuel Macron, prevailed over her rival, Marine Le Pen (leader of the National Rally), in the second round of the presidential elections last spring. Furthermore, they did not wait for the final results to come out, but their messages of support came with the preliminary count.

While Brussels has been profiled, the European extreme right has celebrated the results of Italy. The first to congratulate who is likely to be the Italian prime minister -if her coalition partners so decide- have been the prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbanand the Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki. Precisely the most awkward partners of the European Union for its authoritarian drifts and the constant violations of the right-wing State.

While Morawiecki has limited himself to publishing a tweet that read “Congratulations”, Orbán has accompanied his publication with a photograph together with the leader of the Brothers of Italy. “A victory more than deserved,” he added.

The results of the Italian elections have also made the the French extreme right. Marine LePen, leader of the National Regroupment formation, has assured that “the Italian people have decided to take charge of their destiny by electing a patriotic and sovereignist government”. Thus, he has congratulated, not only Meloni, but also the leader of the League, Matteo Salvini“for resisting the threats of an undemocratic and arrogant European Union”.

For his part, the leader of the Reconquista party, Eric Zemmour, has pointed out: “How can we not look at this victory as proof that it is possible to come to power?” Zemmour, who failed in the presidential and legislative elections in April, has become the new face of the french extreme right with its anti-Islamist and anti-immigration proclamations. Some ideas, also present in Meloni’s speeches.

On the other side of the scale, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, has been cautious and has shown his “respect” for the “democratic option” of the Italian people. He also took the opportunity to make an appeal to “continue working together”.

The German far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has also raised its chest for Meloni’s victory in the general elections. “We congratulate Giorgia Meloni for her election and we wish her to be the first woman to preside over an Italian government“, the two leaders of the formation, Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, have said in a statement. “Like the Swedes, the Italians have also now decided on a change of policy,” they have pointed out.
