The European Union has summoned on Monday the Iranian ambassador to the community institutions, Hosein Dehghani, to show his condemnation of the two new executions of protesters carried out in Iran last weekend.
In a meeting this Monday in Brussels, the Secretary General of the EU External Action Service (EEAS), Stefano Sannino, has summoned Dehghani to whom he has expressed the “strong horror” of the EU at the application of the death penalty against two Iranian demonstrators in connection with the multiple national protests against the death in custody of the young Mahsa Amini, European diplomacy reported in a statement.
Both were found guilty of the death of a security guard during pro-democracy demonstrations in Iran. These executions took place over the weekend and are in addition to new death sentences this Monday against four people in connection with the protests.
In this sense, Sannino has called on the Iranian authorities to “immediately cease” the practice of imposing capital punishment against protesters and to paralyze the application of sentences, guaranteeing due judicial process to all those detained in the framework of the protests. in the country.
The EU has reiterated its firm opposition to the death penalty in all situations and circumstances and has emphasized that Human Rights are at the center of EU relations, warning that its Member States remain “united” in responding to the Tehran’s actions against citizen demonstrations.
This movement comes on the same day that the governments of France and Germany have summoned Iranian diplomats to protest the new death sentences against four prisoners accused of killing several police officers.
