This Friday, the European Union congratulated the Botswana opposition leader Duma Boko for his victory in the parliamentary elections held this week and applauded the “exemplary transition”, after more than 60 years of dominance by the Botswana Democratic Party (PDB), at the helm. of the country since its independence in 1966.
“The EU congratulates Duma President Gideon Boko on his election and the people of Botswana on the peaceful exercise of their civic rights. It (also) welcomes the exemplary transition of power, after the outgoing president, Mokgweetsi Masisi, recognized his defeat and will call on his followers to unite in support of the new Government,” said the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell.
Borrell has vindicated the solidity of bilateral relations between Botswana and the 27, calling on the new Government to “further strengthen (this) partnership” when it takes office.
“As like-minded partners at a multilateral level, we have had a solid collaborative relationship for decades. We are driven by the shared values of democracy and respect for the rule of law,” said the European representative.
The president of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, acknowledged this Friday the defeat of his party in the parliamentary elections and congratulated the winner, the opposition Duma Boko, after a tough setback at the polls, while he promised to “do his best.” possible”.
The BDP, led by Masisi, has dominated Botswana politics since the country gained independence, although this time it went to the polls after years of tensions between Masisi and his predecessor in office, Ian Khama, and in the face of worsening of the economic situation due to the fall in the sale of diamonds, the main source of income for its economy.
