The EU condemns the Russian bombings and demands a political solution to the war in Syria

BRUSSELS Dec. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Union has expressed this Monday its condemnation of Russia’s bombings in support of the Bashar al Assad regime after the offensive led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) on the Syrian province of Aleppo, in the north of the country.

“We condemn Russia’s airstrikes against densely populated areas and its continued support for the repression of the Assad regime,” said in a statement the EU External Action Service, which “closely follows the latest developments” in Syria.

Faced with this situation, in a conflict that had been frozen since 2020, the EU has called on all parties to “reduce tension and guarantee the protection of civilians and civil infrastructure.”

“The latest escalation demonstrates once again the need for a political solution to the conflict that is assumed by Syria,” said EU diplomacy, referring to UN Security Council resolutions.

The offensive by rebels and jihadists has led to fighting mainly in Aleppo, the epicenter of a new escalation that has once again put the country in check. Damascus has responded by also relying on its allied countries and, in fact, the Syrian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the involvement of Russian forces in the attacks.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has confirmed “intense bombing” by Syria and Russia against rebel-controlled areas in the provinces of Idlib, Aleppo and Hama and has stated that Syrian warplanes would have returned to the use of ‘barrel bombs’ , just as they did in previous stages of the war.
