Aug. 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The European Union has condemned the attack perpetrated by the jihadist organization Al Shabaab against the Hayat hotel in the capital, Mogadishu, which it has described as an attempt to undermine the confidence placed in the political progress achieved by the country after the electoral crisis ended.
The Somali Ministry of Health has confirmed this Sunday at least 21 dead and 117 injured in the attack, which led to a police siege of more than 24 hours against the entrenched terrorists.
The balance of the Ministry, collected by the American international radio station Voice of America, also details that 15 of the injured are in serious condition and that a total of 106 people were rescued from the hotel once the police siege ended early this Sunday. .
The attack, regrets the EU, “has occurred at a critical moment in which the new Government of Somalia” tries to “fulfill its functions”.
“The attack was clearly designed to distract both politicians and the security services and intensify pressure on what remains an already tense situation after the protracted electoral process that concluded in May,” the EU adds.
“This latest attack,” asks Brussels, “must not undermine efforts to seek peace and reconciliation among the Somali population.”
