June 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, has condemned the attacks by Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and has called on both parties to end this “deadly cycle of violence”.
“The EU is deeply concerned by the recent escalation of violence in the Palestinian territories, which has caused an appalling number of Palestinian and Israeli casualties,” Borrell said in a statement.
The High Representative referred to the recent attack carried out by two Palestinians near the Eli settlement, which left four Israelis dead, as well as the attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, which killed at least of a Palestinian.
“The EU recalls that Israel has an obligation to guarantee the protection of civilians in the occupied territories,” Borrell said.
In addition, the commissioner has urged Israel “not to go ahead” with its decision to advance planning for more than 4,500 homes in West Bank settlements.
Thus, on behalf of the Union, Borrell has requested “all parties to take immediate action to end the deadly cycle of violence.”
We urge “to put an end to unilateral actions that fuel tensions, to prevent further loss of life, to ensure accountability, to bring perpetrators of crimes to justice and to commit to the efforts to create a peaceful resolution of the conflict”, concluded the High Representative.
