The EU calls its ambassador in Niger for consultations after criticism of the management of humanitarian aid

MADRID 23 Nov. () –

The European Union called its ambassador in Niger, Salvador Pinto da França, for consultations this Saturday, after the criticism leveled by the transitional authorities, who have questioned the management of the funds intended for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the victims of the serious floods that have devastated the country.

“In the face of the crisis in Niger, the EU has always been in favor of continuing to support the population. Humanitarian aid is essential, provided in a neutral, impartial and independent manner, and is carried out by United Nations agencies and international organizations,” said the EU Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Peter Stano.

In this sense, he has expressed that “nothing should justify the instrumentalization of humanitarian aid for political purposes” and has expressed his “deep disagreement with the accusations and justifications presented by the transitional authorities” of Niger.

“The European Union takes note of the press release from the transitional authorities of Niger in which the provisions and management by the EU delegation of the humanitarian aid provided are questioned,” he highlighted.

The EU’s decision comes after the transitional authorities recently showed their dissatisfaction with the ambassador’s behavior in relation to the allocation of funds intended for flood victims, which has opened controversy over transparency and the use of the allocated resources.

The Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated in a statement that it is necessary to “open an audit to determine the use and destination of these funds given to NGOs to guarantee that the resources are used appropriately and reach the populations most affected by the floods.” “.
