July 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The EU has called this Sunday for a “peaceful, democratic and orderly” transition after the revolt this Saturday that has culminated in the announcement that the country’s president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, will resign next Wednesday.

“The EU is closely following the events in Sri Lanka. We ask all parties to cooperate and focus on (achieving) a peaceful, democratic and orderly transition,” said a spokeswoman for the EU External Action Service, Nabila Massrali. .

Thus, Brussels asks the leaders of the political parties for “responsibility” to achieve “a solution to the current crisis and a return to normality.”

“The EU is evaluating the options available to increase its support to the population of Sri Lanka,” the spokeswoman highlighted in the text published on the website of the External Action Service.

This Saturday thousands of people have demonstrated in Colombo and other Sri Lankan cities to protest against Rajapaksa after months of protests. Protesters have stormed the official presidential residence and the president’s whereabouts are unknown.

After the protests, the prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, announced his resignation and later President Rajapaksa himself promised that he would leave office next Wednesday.
