The EU and NATO come out in defense of Albania and condemn the cyberattacks attributed to Iran

BRUSSELS, Sep. 8 (EUROPE PRESS) –

The European Union and NATO have come out this Thursday in defense of Albania and have condemned the cyberattacks against government services of the Balkan country in July attributed to Iran.

“The attack directly targeted critical infrastructure and affected the provision of public services to people and businesses in Albania,” EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell said in a statement on behalf of the EU27.

In this sense, the EU statement regrets that these “unacceptable” actions seek to threaten Albanian democracy. “We strongly condemn this unacceptable behavior in cyberspace, which runs counter to agreed standards of responsible state behaviour,” he said.

In another statement, NATO has shown solidarity with Tirana and has given credibility to the accusations that point to Tehran as the actor behind these maneuvers and has warned that it will study possible collective responses to future attacks.

“We strongly condemn such malicious cyber activities designed to destabilize and damage the security of an Ally and disrupt the daily lives of citizens,” he said.

Thus, the military organization has reiterated the commitment to strengthen Albania’s ability to resist and repel such malicious cyber activities in the future.

“We will continue to raise our guard against cyber attacks in the future and we will support each other to deter, defend and counter the full spectrum of cyber threats, including possible collective responses,” the Atlantic Alliance has stressed.
