BRUSSELS, 26 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The European Union announced on Wednesday an additional 32.7 million euros in humanitarian aid for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a country affected by the activity of armed militias.
As reported by the European Commission, these funds will be channeled through humanitarian organizations on the ground and are intended to cover the immediate needs of the population affected by the conflict. The focus is to guarantee nutrition, healthcare, access to water and sanitation, shelter and protection for the most vulnerable groups.
In total, the EU has allocated almost €80 million this year in humanitarian aid to deal with the deteriorating situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Another important European initiative is the humanitarian airlifts, with which the Twenty-seven have delivered 260 tons of medical and nutritional supplies, through seven flights organized by France.
Precisely this Wednesday, the national Army has regained control of ten towns in the province of Ituri (east) after fighting with the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) militia, which has increased its activities in the area in recent weeks.
