The ambassador of the United Arab Emirates, Saif al Zaabi, will return to Iran in the near future after more than six years of suspension of high-level diplomatic contacts between the two countries.
The Emirates withdrew Al Zaabi in January 2016 after denouncing Iran’s “repeated interference” in the internal affairs of countries in the Persian Gulf and the Arab world, which has recently reached an “unprecedented” level after the assault on the Saudi Embassy in Tehran by Iranian protesters after Riyadh executed a prominent Shia cleric.
Now, and according to a statement collected by the official Emirati news agency WAM, “in the framework of the enthusiasm of the leaders of the United Arab Emirates to strengthen their relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ambassador Saif Muhamad Al Zaabi will return to Tehran in the coming days”.
With this decision, the Emirates applies its decision to “raise the level of diplomatic representation”, adopted by the call last July between the Emirati foreign ministers, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the Iranian, Hussein Amir Abdolahian.
Last year, Saudi Arabia and Iran began rounds of talks in Iraq to improve relations between the two great rivals in the region.
