The first to express their opinion on the presidential intentions were the applications. The In Alliance, an association that brings together the Didi, Rappi, Uber and Cabify platforms, said it was open to the possibility and negotiations with the government, marking as a starting point to focus the discussion on “the flexibility and independence” of the delivery people.
This same concept was addressed by the association of United Distributors of Mexico (RUM), a community of platform delivery partners representing various groups, which brings together more than 2,000 people, who indicate that they were in favor of social security, but not under the condition of being subordinates of a company.
“We are truly very grateful for this initiative of the President, but perhaps wanting to do good could cause us harm. I think that the most appropriate thing would be to add us to the dialogue because no one better than us who go through these situations every day can resolve the needs and not just as a completed item on their list,” Fabián Ortega, leader of RUM, told Expansión.
This association requested dialogue with Sheinbaum and presented a 10-point decalogue that contemplates access to social security in a dynamic, flexible scheme without the need to establish traditional subordination, with which – they believe – they would lose the most important characteristic for them: freedom.
This Monday, people grouped in RUM demonstrated at the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare demanding dialogue in the context of the development of labor reforms that may affect their way of working.
The delivery drivers were summoned this Tuesday to begin the dialogue at the Ministry of Labor; However, so far the delivery drivers have not declared in this regard.
The Alliance In Mexico pointed out that at said meeting they shared the general aspects of the initiative and today, October 16, they received the text that Claudia Sheinbaum’s government will promote soon.
“We are analyzing its implications on the business model and potential impact on the entire ecosystem: drivers, delivery people, restaurant entrepreneurs and end users,” he noted.
He added that it is essential to continue dialogue with all parties involved before sending an initiative to Congress, “since this could put at risk the existence of these opportunities and the benefits that these technologies provide to the general population.”
“We remain fully willing to contribute with proposals, international experiences and data, to build a regulation that can be a model to follow and that allows people who generate profits through applications to have access to social security. Considering the relevance of this matter, we are attentive to holding a meeting as soon as possible with the Secretary of the branch, Marath Bolaños, and with all the actors involved in this process.”
