The Madagascar authorities have raised to 34 the death toll of migrants after the boat they were traveling in sank last Sunday off the coast of the island nation.
The initial report published two days ago pointed to 22 deaths and another 23 rescued migrants. In the new balance shared this Tuesday, the Malagasy maritime authority has also included three deceased minors.
As reported by the authorities, the boat was heading to the French overseas island of Mayotte, located off the southeastern coast of Africa, between Madagascar and the mainland.
Sources from the security forces consulted by Radio France Internationale (RFI) already pointed out on Sunday that the “improvised” boat, a wooden motor boat, had not been located.
Last February, the Malagasy coast guard stopped a boat with 33 migrants on board off the aforementioned island of Mayotte.
