SAN SALVADOR – Génesis Ixcajoc, 7 years old, went out on January 1 to the alley where he often played with his neighbors. It was New Years and the girl, named after the first book of the Bible, disappeared in that same alley minutes later. Her body was found half buried just a few steps from there.
She was carrying a pink backpack with toys. The girl was kidnapped, raped, strangled and buried in a place whose construction she had not yet finished.
The authors of the events sought to hide the body with cement and sand, but the pink backpack found on the blocks brought its whereabouts to light.
Although Genesis was no longer alive, outside a crowd was still looking for her.
A few hours later family and friends accused three brothers of being the murderers: Edwin Giovanni, 28; Luis Angel, 30; and Jairo Daniel, 33, all with the last name Chamalé Elías.
According to the Guatemalan Police, the inhabitants of Ciudad Peronia wanted to lynch the brothers, who are now in the custody of the Guatemalan Prosecutor’s Office, which has declared the case confidential, for which reason they have not offered details.
The case has caused a stir in the Central American country. The organization Aldeas Infantiles SOS de Guatemala spoke out on the case and asked the Guatemalan State to prioritize the protection of children.
“Genesis died for apparent acts of femicide. (…) We call on the State, the competent authorities and civil society to prioritize the comprehensive protection of girls, boys and adolescents for a life free of violence,” he said in a statement. .
Genesis was the first girl to die violently in 2023 in Guatemala. In 2022, 453 minors were murdered in this country, according to a report presented by the Institutional Coordinator for the Promotion of Children’s Rights (Ciprodeni).
An alley with candles
Josefa Tenzen, grandmother of Genesis, told the local media Free Press that the alley where the girl was abducted was a place where she played every day.
“This was his place. The alley where she played… My heart aches because I’m not going to have her anymore,” the woman said.
In that alley there are now candles, and some white figures made of plastic and paper in the name of the girl who, according to the central Guatemalan morgue, died of suffocation by strangulation.
The brothers accused of the crime were sent to preventive detention on January 3 by a court in Guatemala City. The Attorney General’s Office accuses them of kidnapping, murder and rape.
Génesis was veiled on January 2 in the community where she grew up the first years of her life. A white hearse toured the place and the applause of the neighbors was not lacking.
