Begoña Gómez, the wife of the President of the Government, will be able to enter the courts in Plaza de Castilla in Madrid by car this Friday, summoned to testify as a person under investigation by Judge Peinado. The dean of the Madrid courts, María Jesús del Barco, explains that in this case “there is a possible risk to the physical integrity of Begoña Gómez” according to the information provided by the Security Department of the Presidency of the Government.
The wife of the Prime Minister is called to testify this Friday at ten o’clock in the morning as a suspect in court number 41 of the Plaza de Castilla in Madrid. A case opened by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado after Manos Limpias filed a complaint based on press reports in which it accused Gómez of a series of irregularities without providing evidence: from having facilitated the multi-million-dollar rescue of Air Europa to having intervened in the awarding of contracts to the UTE led by businessman Carlos Barrabés.
Throughout the case, Judge Peinado has taken testimony from two journalists who published information about the case. Journalists who defended the veracity of their publications but also acknowledged that, throughout the investigations, they found no evidence that, for example, Gómez had exerted any effective pressure to favour Barrabés. He also requested a report from the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard, which denied the existence of any indications of a crime.
In recent weeks, as Gómez’s summons as a suspect approached, her defense and the judge have been engaged in an exchange of requests and responses in which the lawyer requested clarification of exactly what facts were being investigated. Especially after the Provincial Court of Madrid endorsed part of the investigation but established that the accusations for the rescue of Air Europa were based on “conjectures” by Manos Limpias. Also after the European Prosecutor’s Office requested part of the case.
The magistrate’s response was to affirm that these two milestones do not deprive his investigation of content and that he is continuing to investigate Begoña Gómez for any accusation from Manos Limpias that has to do with Pedro Sánchez’s time as President of the Government. A case recently extended to the businesswoman’s activity at the Complutense University of Madrid with the summons of its rector, as a witness, also for this Friday.
Gómez’s statement is scheduled for ten in the morning. In recent days, the Security Department of the Presidency of the Government had requested that she be allowed to enter the court building in Plaza de Castilla in Madrid by car, something that the dean, María Jesús del Barco, has allowed. “As can be seen from the report sent by the Security Department of the Presidency of the Government, there is a possible risk to the physical integrity of Begoña Gómez for the reasons explained therein,” she explains.
He also announced that, as requested by the Department of Security, “a security team will be organised to accompany him at the entrance, access and stay in the building”, for which the garage is necessary.
