This Monday marks the 100th day of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s return to power. The beginnings were very turbulent with the assault on the country’s institutions by supporters of Jair Bolsonaro. Now, the main concern is the economy.

Eight days after assuming power, Lula da Silva has already had to face a coup attempt. Hundreds of people stormed the seat of government, the Supreme Court and Congress.
“It rescues some values that are part of Brazilian society because the Brazilian people have conservative characteristics, but also progressive ones,” says Clarisse Gurgel, professor of Social Sciences at UniRio University..
With the promise of bringing the poor into the budget, Lula Da Silva’s team has recently presented the proposal for a new fiscal structure that foresees the end of the deficit in 2024, but its approval depends on Congress.
Interest rates are not falling and, according to Rosianne dos Santos, neither are the value of basic products on the market. “None of his promises are being fulfilled, I somehow regretted having voted for him,” he says.
In January, a firm action against illegal mining put an end to years of omission by the government of Jair Bolsonaro. Planes, rafts and machinery were seized and fines imposed on Yanomami indigenous lands. Poached miners left the area and a major health crisis came to light. It was a clear sign of a shift in environmental policy, as highlighted by Claudio Evandro.
“He sent resources and medicines to the sick indigenous people, food. He is helping the people and he is going to do even more ”, she claims.
This Tuesday Lula da Silva travels to China, where he will try once again to position himself as a leading international leader in mediating the war in Ukraine.
