There was a time when every company wanted to have its own Grand Theft Auto. No franchise lived up to the Rockstar Games series, but there were a couple that captured the hearts of fans. One of them was Saints Rowwhich returned in 2022 with a reboot that, unfortunately, did not meet expectations.
The open-world video game that sought to revive the saga with a new approach debuted in August 2022. It received poor reception from critics and fans, which is reflected in its mixed ratings. Currently, it has an average score of 61 on Metacritic and mixed reviews on Steam.
Consequently, the controversial reboot of Saints Row was a business failure and did not meet financial expectations. Now, almost 2 years after his debut, a former employee of Volitionthe developer studio, revealed how many units the title sold during its time in stores.

2022’s Saints Row sold 1.7 million copies, is it the least successful game of the IP?
To the surprise of perhaps few people, everything seems to indicate that the most recent installment was the least selling title in the entire history of the franchise.
Tyrin Stevensonwho served as social media and community manager at Volition between May 2022 and September 2023, revealed on his personal account LinkedIn that the reboot of Saints Row barely sold 1.7 million units after its launch 2 years ago.
To gauge the scope of this title, it is worth reviewing the commercial performance of the rest of the main installments of the saga. As reported from the portal VGC, Saints Row The Third It is the most successful delivery with more than 5.5 million units soldwhile Saints Row 2 shipped 3.2 million. The original game, which was an Xbox 360 exclusive, managed to distribute 2 million copies.
The only question is Saints Row 4which sold more than 1 million units in its first week in that distant 2013. It is unknown how many total cups it distributed throughout its life cycle, but it is very likely that it exceeded the 1.7 million that the 2022 reboot shipped.
Lars Wingefors, director of Embracer Group, was particularly disappointed by the poor reception that the last game in the saga had. Although he claimed that it was liked by many players, he also acknowledged that it disappointed others. After this failure, the developer studio Volition closed its doors at the end of August 2023.
It is unknown what lies ahead for the franchise, but Deep Silver reassured the community and stated that the IP will continue to live under the umbrella of PLAION, its parent company.
But tell us, did you like this title? Do you think he deserved a second chance? Let us read you in the comments.
