The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia has reported this Monday that the Japanese consul in the city of Vladivostok, Motoki Tatsunori, has been arrested on Russian territory.
In a statement, the Russian authorities have clarified that he has been arrested after being caught “red-handed by receiving monetary compensation in exchange for information on aspects of Russia’s cooperation with countries in Asia and the Pacific.”
They have also accused him of delivering information on the “impact of the sanctions imposed by the international community”, especially in the region of Primorski Krai, whose capital is Vladivostok.
“We have filed a note of protest with the Japanese government through diplomatic channels,” said the FSB, which has confirmed that Tatsunori has been declared “persona non grata” in relation to “activities incompatible with diplomatic status.”
