The Constitutional Court of Romania announced this past Saturday the invalidation of the presidential candidacy of the far-right Diana Sosoaca, leader of the SOS Romania party, a decision that took place during the preparations for the presidential elections: two rounds that will be held on 24 November and December 8, with parliamentary elections in between, in a very fragmented scenario.
Sosoaca, whose party won two seats in the elections to the European Parliament last June, has harshly criticized the decision through a live broadcast on Facebook where he has assured that “the United States, the Jews and the European Union have conspired to decide before the elections” and asked the Constitutional Court for immediate explanations.
The invalidation of his candidacy could cause a redistribution of votes among sovereignist voters that, according to political analysts, could favor George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), who would see his chances of becoming president increased. second round against the country’s social democratic prime minister, Marcel Ciolacu.
It should be remembered that Sosoaca was expelled from a session of the European Parliament in the summer for appearing with a dog muzzle and starting to shout “In God we trust” after French MEP Valerie Hayer, from the Renew Europe group, advocated for the incorporation of the right to abortion to the EU Treaty. The Romanian high court has not yet ruled on its reasons but it is common for the court to wait a few days to publish a reasoned argument.
However, Ciolacu has already publicly expressed his concern with the court’s decision, asking it to publish the reasons as soon as possible so as not to inflame tensions.
“The decision in the case of Mrs. Diana Sosoaca, seems at first glance and in the absence of justification, disproportionate in relation to the fundamental democratic principle of electing and being elected,” the prime minister said in an appearance reported by the portal. Romanian News Capital.
“The main role of the Constitutional Court,” he added, “is to defend the candidates and their right to be elected, not to be an obstacle to their participation in the elections, and I will always defend that positions must be won at the polls through the popular vote, because That is the essence of democracy.”
“I believe that the Constitutional Court must quickly present the reasoning that served as the basis for this decision and that it must contain solid legal and constitutional arguments,” the prime minister concluded.
