MADRID 31 Oct. () –
The Constitutional Court of Moldova has ratified this Thursday the results of the constitutional referendum held just ten days ago and in which the option of reforming the Magna Carta to advance integration in the European Union was imposed with less than 50.4 percent and a margin of only 11,400 votes.
The Constitutional Court has responded to the request presented days ago by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) to confirm the results of the referendum amid criticism from the opposition regarding the small margin of votes with which the ‘yes’ vote was imposed. Certain sectors accuse the government of influencing the vote.
On the opposite side, the Government and the sectors that were in favor of advancing European integration have denounced for weeks an alleged campaign of interference promoted by Russia, which would have gone so far as to bribe Moldovan citizens in exchange for them voting. no’ in the plebiscite, reports the local press.
In this sense, the president of the CEC, Angelica Caraman, has spoken out precisely, stating that “the results can only be influenced by reducing the ‘no’ option, because from what has been discovered at this stage (… ) certain voters decided for amounts of money to opt for the ‘no’ option.
Moldova submitted its application to join the European Union in March 2022 – just a few days after the start of the war in Ukraine. Some time later, the European Commission set a series of recommendations so that Chisinau could become a member of the community bloc.
With the victory of the ‘yes’ in the plebiscite, Moldova has given the ‘green light’ to the European path promoted by President Maia Sandu – who this Sunday aspires to re-election – and therefore several amendments to the Constitution that reflect that the country aligns with the constituent and founding treaties of the EU.
