An opposition party speaks of “victory of the rule of law” and says it will work to renew the body
6 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Constitutional Court of Gabon has announced the dissolution of the Gabonese Center for Elections (CGE), an institution organized to organize the elections, due to the lack of internal renewal within the periods contemplated by the legislation.
The decision has been adopted after a petition presented by the opposition party Reappropriation of Gabon and its Independence for its Reconstruction (Reagir) confirming that the mandate of the members of the CGE expired two years ago.
Thus, he has affirmed that “the end of the mandate of the current CGE committee has been verified due to its non-renewal within the deadlines given by the Constitutional Court, according to the Gabonese state news agency, AGP.
Reagir’s spokesman, Etiénne Francky Meda Ondo, spoke after that of a “victory of the rule of law” and stated that the party “hopes that the government finally complies, because it has not done so quickly, article 92 of the Constitution, which establishes that court decisions are not subject to appeal”.
“We are going to activate, together with our partners in the opposition, to see the modalities of participation in the renewal (of the electoral body) demanded by the court,” he said in statements given to the French radio station Radio France Internationale.
The CGE committee, in office since 2018 for a two-year term, saw its term extended in June 2020 and October 2022, although the December deadline passed without renewal. The Government now has 30 days to renew the body, which must organize the presidential, legislative and local elections scheduled for this year.
