The Constitutional Court of Croatia prohibits the president from being a candidate for prime minister after the elections

April 19 () –

The Constitutional Court of Croatia ruled this Friday against the president of the country, Zoran Milanovic, being a candidate for prime minister after the elections held this Wednesday in the country and after having warned the president that Justice would take measures in case of to run for election without having previously resigned as head of state.

“The president was notified in advance that he would not be able to participate in the campaign if he did not first present his resignation. Now his time is up. He can no longer be the first candidate for prime minister,” said the president of the court, Miroslav Separovic. , during a press conference. “The political parties that support him should know this and take it into account,” he said, according to information from the newspaper '24 Sata'.

However, the president of the court has indicated that if a total of 76 deputies present their signature in favor of Milanovic being a candidate for prime minister to try to form a government, the court will annul its decision.

The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) of the current Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, has won the legislative elections by obtaining 61 seats, which makes its formation the most voted in Parliament. However, he does not have enough support to govern alone and will have to reach agreements with other political forces.

In second place is, precisely, the Ríos de Justicia coalition, led by the president of the country and which has won 42 deputies. Already in March the court alerted Milanovic that his candidacy for the elections was “unconstitutional” if he did not first resign from his position.
