MADRID Nov. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Constitutional Council of Mozambique, which exercises the functions of the Supreme Court, has rejected the vast majority of appeals presented after the presidential elections, in which the opposition has denounced fraud after refusing to recognize the victory of the official candidate, Daniel Chapo.
The spokesperson for the organization, Pedro Nhatitima, has specified that “the majority of cases have not come to fruition for several reasons, including the lack of quick notice and the lack of evidence attached due to the lack of knowledge about the procedures on the part of the political parties.” involved”.
Thus, he explained that in many of the appeals presented to the courts, the complainants limited themselves to formulating general accusations, without presenting evidence, which makes it difficult to verify the complaints, as reported by the Mozambican state news agency. , AIM.
Nhatitima has stated that the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Vamos), which supports the main opposition candidate, Venancio Mondlane, has presented a total of 70 appeals before courts of first instance, which are added to the 51 of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) and the 15 of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM).
“There are some who asked that the elections be canceled or repeated due to irregularities that they consider serious in the polling stations, but their requests have not been accepted because they were raised before district courts, when it is the responsibility of the Constitutional Council,” he argued.
However, in the demands that have been accepted, the existence of discrepancies between the number of voters and the number of ballots at the polls has been confirmed, as well as the refusal of the electoral commission to receive complaints or to call representatives of the parties that were present at the count.
Nhatitima’s words come after the Mozambican opposition parties that ran in the presidential elections at the beginning of October signed a joint statement in which they denounce irregularities during the elections in favor of Chapo, candidate of the government’s Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo).
Podemos published during the day on Monday a parallel account of the elections in which it maintains that its candidate, Venancio Mondlane, won the victory after collecting 53.38 percent of the votes, ahead of the 35.66 percent collected for Chapo, to whom the electoral commission has given more than 70 percent of the endorsements.
The National Electoral Commission (CNE) delivered the recount data to the Constitutional Council on Monday for analysis and possible ratification, amid the absence of publication of the official minutes by both the organization and Podemos, which maintains that has provided them to the Constitutional Council.
The situation is such that Mondlane himself has announced a “march towards Maputo” to try to overthrow the authorities after refusing to recognize the official results of the presidential elections. The Mozambican Government has recommended that the population avoid participating in protests following the disturbances recorded in recent days.
