The pact, called ‘The best for Berlin’, includes a one billion euro program for climate protection, administrative reform, better equipment for the Police and Fire Brigade, as well as more speed in the construction of new homes and the maintenance of the price of 29 euros for the monthly ticket for regional public transport.
Giffey explained that the SPD deputies have to give him the green light on April 23 and that the next day the regional CDU will also decide on the pact at a party conference. If both groups give the ‘green light’, the signing of the agreement is scheduled for Wednesday, April 26. The next day the new mayor will be elected in plenary session of the regional Parliament.
In this way, Wegner would become the first Christian Democrat in this position since 2001. The CDU won the rerun with 28.2 percent of the vote, while the SPD and the Greens obtained 18.4 percent. each. For the SPD it was the worst result in its history.
