The cities of the country where labor informality remains at high levels

This week, Dane announced the update for the December 2023-February 2024 quarter, from the reports of labor informality in the country, which show that although this indicator continues to fall, it is still above the levels that analysts consider high for the local economy.

According to this entity, as far as the national total is concerned, the percentage of Colombians who are in labor informality was 56.3%, which meant a decrease of 1.5 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the previous year (57.8%).

On the other hand, for the 13 cities and metropolitan areas, this proportion was 41.5%, which represented a decrease of 1 percentage point compared to the moving quarter December 2022 – February 2023 (42.6%); while regarding the 23 cities and metropolitan areas, the proportion of informality was 42.9%.

The countryside and rural municipalities continue to be the territories with the highest rates of labor informality, since in the category of “Populated centers and dispersed rural areas” The proportion of informality for the moving quarter December 2023 – February 2024 was 84.2%. This means that in the cities, while only 4 out of every 10 Colombians are in the informal sector, this indicator is double in rural areas.

Making a review by sex, Dane reported that within the national total, the proportion of informal men in the moving quarter December 2023 – February 2024 was 58.0%, which meant a decrease of 2.0 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the previous year. In the case of women, 53.8% were informally employed, which implied a decrease of 0.8 pp compared to the moving quarter December 2022 – February 2023 (54.7%).

Currently, the cities with the highest proportion of informality are Sincelejo (69.5%), Valledupar (62.6%) and Riohacha (62.0%)while the cities with the lowest proportion of informality are Bogotá (33.3%), Manizales (34.3%) and Medellín (37.2%).
