For the specific case of the semiconductor industry, Cenam will be essential for chips to meet quality standards, but it will also contribute to the optimization of design and manufacturing processes.
Alejandro Franco, founder and CEO of QSM Semiconductors, points out that this type of collaboration represents a “decisive step by laying the foundations for the creation of a solid ecosystem aimed at the production of chips in the country and being an important boost to innovation.” and technological development in Mexico.”
From his perspective, the nation has a great opportunity in the chip business due to three factors: its strategic geographic location, its competitive workforce from agreements with universities, and trade agreements with other countries.
What other collaborations are needed to exploit chips in Mexico?
Franco adds that this exchange of knowledge in metrology, processes and prototype design will be crucial to maintain development between private and government sectors in the industry in compliance with international best practices.
However, that is not the only aspect that needs to be covered in the country to build a solid and resilient chip industry, since “a strong emphasis must also be placed on the training of specialized talent. “Mexico will need a group of semiconductor experts who can lead advances in this industry.”
Likewise, it highlights that other important areas for the sector that need to be accessed are risk capital, advanced technology and strategic advice to develop innovative capabilities.
In financial terms, the specialist points out the requirement to secure capital for long-term financing of infrastructure, research and development (R&D), and training of specialized personnel.
QSM Semiconductors, the Mexican firm that wants to take advantage of the chip industry
QSM Semiconductors has its headquarters in Querétaro, where it has an Engineering Center and a Design Center for the production of its own chips focused on commonly used devices.
According to statements that Franco shared with Expansión, this company is expected to have its own factory in operation by 2025, from where it will produce chips with the Made in Mexico seal.
According to company forecasts, this new plant will require an investment of around 9 million dollars and will employ around 100 people with a high level of technical specialization in the industry for the production of semiconductors.
The construction of the plant is aimed at avoiding outsourcing in the chip manufacturing process, since in its current dynamics, QSM designs the chips and sends them to Asia and then imports them again.
