() — The Chilean Chamber of Deputies approved on Monday the constitutional reform that restores compulsory voting in the southern country.
The measure was approved by 124 votes in favor, 6 against and 3 abstentions. Now the proposal is ready to be reviewed by the Executive Power.
Since 2012, automatic registration and voluntary voting have been in force in Chile, a measure imposed during the first government of former President Sebastián Piñera.
The idea of reinstating the compulsory vote returned after the constitutional plebiscite on September 4, where participation reached 85.7% as it was compulsory.
