First modification:
Initially considered a political crisis, two months of continuous demonstrations in Peru have exposed the fragility of its democracy.
The south of Peru has been the region where the most demonstrations have been registered since the day the country entered a new political crisis, on December 7, 2022, when former president Pedro Castillo was imprisoned and imprisoned.
Indigenous populations
“It started near Cusco, then spread to Puno, and in general it has been located throughout the south of Peru, coinciding with the territory where the most important reactions of indigenous populations have been given: ‘Enough of being considered second-rate class, we want our vote, even if it has not been a good government, to be respected, recognized’”, explains Carlos Hertz, director of the Bartolomé de Las Casas Center, located in Cusco, to RFI.
The Unitary Union of Educational Workers of Peru (SUTEP) has called for a new national mobilization, at the same time the patrols of La Libertad have traveled and say they are going to block Lima once again.
“Lima and Peru are overwhelmed. Peru is paralyzed. There have been more than 120 blockade points across the country, and that has to be understood by government authorities as well. It is a very political message in the good sense of the word: we want a change of government, regime, Parliament, and we want the following elections to be held under other conditions, in which the voice of the country’s most marginal populations is heard. ”, continues the director of the Bartolomé de Las Casas Center.
political challenges
Pedro Castillo lasted less than 18 months in government, he is the fifth president of Peru in six years. Three of them were removed by Congress, four have been persecuted or prosecuted, and another, Alan García, committed suicide in 2019, accused of corruption.
“We need to have different leaders, different political and social institutions, that is the great challenge in the short term. Let’s also think in the medium term and add a challenge that all of us have, which is to recreate the political life of the country”, concludes Carlos Hertz.
