After eight years of receiving content, the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight expands its universe with a spin-off called The Casting of Frank Stone, which is available today for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. This proposal is different, as we are faced with a narrative horror title where the player’s decisions mark the story and the destiny of the protagonists.

The Casting of Frank Stone is a self-contained narrative experience set in the town of Cedar Hills in the summer of 1980. This town is located in the state of Oregon (USA) and is marked by the shadow of Frank Stone, a sadistic killer who “has left scars on families, several generations and the very fabric of reality.” Cedar Hills’ past seems like a good setting for a group of four young aspiring filmmakers to go and shoot, Super 8 camera in hand, Metal Massacre, their first work in the world of the seventh art with which they intend to leave their mark on horror cinema.

Our protagonists soon discover that the history of the Cedar Hills Metals Factory is far worse than its script. “Was it fate that brought the budding creators to this site, or something far more abominable?” reads the game’s description. “When their film uncovers long-forgotten secrets of the town’s infamous serial killer, Frank Stone, they find themselves entangled in a web of cosmic terrors beyond all comprehension.”

If we had started this news by saying that The Casting of Frank Stone is a narrative horror game developed by Supermassive Games, many would not need to read any further to learn about the mechanics and its approach. This British studio made its fortune in 2015 with Until Dawn and has since specialized in this genre with the anthologies The Dark Pictures and The Quarry. The pillars of these games are a horror story that puts a group of people at the center, decisions by the player that have consequences for the protagonists, a killer lurking in the shadows, puzzles and quick time events.

“The world of Dead by Daylight has always been filled with deep stories,” said Dave Richard, Senior Creative Director for Dead by Daylight. “However, the game only goes so far in telling those stories. In The Casting of Frank Stone, we explore these narratives through a new cinematic experience based entirely on player choice.”

Those interested in trying out The Casting of Frank Stone can find a demo with the prologue on Steam.
