Kaohsiung () – The Catholic Church of Taiwan yesterday held the central celebration of its fifth National Eucharistic Congress at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center. More than 10,000 Catholics from across the island gathered in the southern city of the country for the event focused on the theme “Fraternity heals everything.” The rite was presided over by Card. John Tong Hon, bishop emeritus of Hong Kong and envoy of Pope Francis, who wanted to expressly show in this way his closeness to the Catholics of Taiwan.
The celebration of the Eucharistic Congress was the conclusion of an entire year of catechesis and liturgical celebrations in the dioceses of the island. With special attention to the sacrament of Reconciliation, a sign of that fraternity that – as the motto says – is the only balm capable of healing the world. A large exhibition on the meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the believer was also installed in the exhibition center.
On the sidelines of the celebrations, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tien Chung-kwang, met with Card. Tong. The bishop emeritus of Hong Kong told Tien that he had been impressed by the speed with which Taiwanese society has returned to normal after Typhoon Krathon, which hit Kaohsiung hard a few days ago. A calamity that could not dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of the Catholics gathered around the Eucharist that heals and gives life.
For his part, the vice minister noted Taiwan’s respect for religious freedom and diversity in society. Despite the current challenges – he added – the government and people of Taiwan continue to offer their contribution to the world in the field of humanitarian aid and health care.
Tien also promised that Taiwan and the Vatican will intensify their cooperation in the humanitarian field based on the positive relationship they currently have.
