Square Enix is known for its history with JRPG games, as it was thanks to it that the genre was established at the turn of the last millennium. In fact, from his hands was produced what for many is the best JRPG of all time, the legendary Chrono triggerthe work of the dream team led by the creators of the equally iconic franchises dragonball, final fantasy and Dragon Quest. Today we all know how the SNES title became the magnificent work that it is without losing the crown, but it was so close to being a great failure.
The Monaco Anime Game International Conferences 2023 (MAGIC 2023) was recently held, which was attended by renowned creatives in the industry. Among them was Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of final fantasy and founder of the Mistwalker studio.

Hironobu Sakaguchi fulfilled his dream of working with Akira Toriyama
The creative took advantage of his space at the event to recall the time in which he participated in the development of Chrono triggerwhich for many is the best RPG of all time and in which he formed the JRPG dream team by joining forces with Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest) and Akira Toriyama (dragonball).
“I was already a fan of Toriyama’s manga before he entered the game industry,” Sakaguchi said. “So working together with him was like a dream come true for me. The same could be said for all the staff, so his artwork became a huge motivation for us.”
In fact, the creative took the opportunity to share an illustration of him designed by Akira Toriyama.
The dream team of Chrono trigger came close to failing
But that doesn’t mean that working on it was hunky-dory; in fact it has been the most complicated of all in which he has participated, which is why he is very fond of it. What is most striking is that at some stage of development the project had to be completely restarted to save it.
“It almost became a mediocre game, so we had to undo the project and start from scratch,” said the legendary developer (via IGN), without offering any further details on the issues that caused the game to not work.

It is very interesting to imagine how this would have affected the genre and Square Enix’s desire to continue creating RPGs. Or perhaps the way in which it would have affected the professional career of all the creatives involved, since their work would have been due.
Fortunately, all this remains in the realm of speculation, since the game was fascinating and Sakaguchi says that Toriyama was also happy with how the game turned out.
