Given the creepy precedents in film adaptations of the franchise, no one expected too much from ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘, a renewed vision of the legendary fantasy world that was born as a role-playing game, that has been so influential over the decades and that now you can recover on Netflix and Movistar Plus+. However, the result of this bet by Paramount surprised both skeptics and believers, with a drift towards humor, light adventure and charismatic characters.
In terms of setting, there aren’t too many surprises in this new ‘Dungeons & Dragons’, and that is precisely what makes it great. Recover without complexes the scenarios and situations of classic adventures (travel through dungeons, kill dragons, steal relics, flee from danger, create teams of people with disparate talents), and thus ‘Honor Among Thieves’ does not renounce its past, while at the same time it manages to renew a universe that, due to higher bets, serious for fantasy like the latest series of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ or ‘Game of Thrones’ has partially worn out.
The film tells how a charismatic thief (Chris Pine) and a fierce warrior (Michelle Rodríguez), along with a group of thieves like them, search for a magical relic. But the mission goes awry and the two ringleaders are arrested. Years later, when they are released from prison, they decide to reunite the old band of thieves, add new adventurers, and recover the magical object that has fallen into hands that are going to misuse it.
Buried in references to ‘D&D’ (which you don’t need to know to enjoy the film), what works best in the proposal is that it seems like an authentic role-playing game: the adventure It twists into unpredictable twists and turns and improvisation and chaos abound.exactly the same as players would do in a real game. Unfortunately, the coincidence on the billboard with a bombshell like ‘Super Mario Bros. – The Movie’ meant that its collection was not entirely satisfactory. However, word of mouth and its passage through platforms have turned it into a cult success and it is already considered one of the best fantasy and adventure films of recent years.
