“The ball is now in Tehran”

The US accuses Russia of diverting attention from its "atrocities" with the "show trials" in Mariupol

BRUSSELS, 25 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, affirmed this Thursday that the United States’ response to the final proposal of the European Union to resume the nuclear agreement with Iran is “reasonable” and has pointed out that it is now the responsibility of Tehran take steps to return to the pact sealed in 2015.

“The American counterproposal is reasonable and the ball is now in Tehran. We hope it will come out,” said the head of community diplomacy on the negotiations to return to the Iranian nuclear pact, in a few words within the framework of some conferences of the Courses of Summer at the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP).

This Wednesday, Washington responded to Borrell’s final text proposal, a response that the EU sent to the participants of the nuclear agreement, in particular to the Iranian authorities for study.

The EU sees the proposal as a final document that participants must sign or reject, after a 16-month process of talks, mainly in Vienna, to get the United States to return to the Iran nuclear deal.

Said pact, considered key to security in the region, has been badly damaged since former President Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to leave in 2018. The negotiations seek to restore strict limits on Iran’s nuclear activity in exchange for the United States relaxing some of the its sanctions on the economy of the Persian republic, including the one imposed on its oil exports.
