The AU warns that the suspension of political parties in Mali can "hinder" the transition

Calls on the military junta to “reconsider” the decision and work on a 'roadmap' to finalize the transition

April 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The African Union (AU) has shown its “great concern” about the decision of the Malian military junta to suspend all political parties and associations and has warned that this measure could “hinder” the transition process” opened after the coups of State of 2020 and 2021.

The president of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has stressed that “this suspension may hinder the application of an inclusive transition process” and has stressed the importance of respecting “the right of citizen, religious and political participation” of the Malian citizens.

Thus, he has asked the board to “reconsider” the decision and “work on a 'roadmap' that aims to materialize the ongoing transition process”, while reiterating the continental body's “continued support” for the population of Mali.

Faki Mahamat has also emphasized “the organization's willingness to work with the transitional authorities and all relevant parties in Mali for the reestablishment of the constitutional order, within the foreseen deadlines, with the aim of promoting peace, stability and lasting development in Mali”.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Abdoulaye Maiga, who argued that the board sought to guarantee that the inter-Mali dialogue announced on December 31 by the transitional president, Assimi Goita, is held “in a climate of serenity and without cacophony “, after the restart of hostilities between the Army and Tuareg separatists in the north of the African country.

The Malian military junta has been criticized by the international community for repeated postponements in the transition process opened after the coup led by Goita in August 2020, when he overthrew the then president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

Goita led a second coup d'état in May 2021 against the transitional authorities – at which time he overthrew the president and prime minister, Bah Ndaw and Moctar Ouane -, subsequently assuming the position of transitional president of Mali. Since then there have been numerous delays in the process, with no elections having been held to date.
