Burkina Faso has registered a sharp increase in jihadist attacks in recent years, the work of both Al Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates in the region, which led the military junta headed by Ibrahim Traoré to decree a mobilization in April general.

The attacks have also contributed to increased intercommunal violence and have caused self-defense groups to flourish, to which the Burkinabe government has added “volunteers.” The deterioration of security has caused a wave of internally displaced persons and refugees to other countries in the region.
