The most recent of these reports, which covers the first quarter of 2023, indicates that there are zero complaints from customs officials before the now Attorney General of the Republic and the OIC. At the end of 2022, 3 complaints were reported to the FGR and 41 to the OIC.
In January 2022, the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) began to operate instead of the General Customs Administration (AGA); one of the administrations in charge of the Tax Administration Service (SAT).
ANAM now operates as a decentralized administrative institution of the Ministry of Finance.
According to the internal regulations of the agency, one of the functions of coordination with the armed forces and national security and public security institutions is to preserve security at the access points to the country.
In this sense, the Ministry of National Defense is in charge of coordinating border customs, while maritime customs are administered by the Ministry of the Navy and the interior, by ANAM, reports a KPMG analysis.
With the new agency, unlike the AGA, elements of the armed forces can be part of ANAM to be assigned to customs with the task of: facilitating, monitoring and controlling the entry and exit of goods and people from the country.
The Treasury does not mention how many of these complaints have already had a final sentence or how many have been rejected, or if the officials are detained or face the complaints at liberty.
