The Popular Defense Forces (HPG), the military arm of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), has announced the deaths of three Turkish soldiers in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in the north of the country.
“The attacks of the Turkish occupation Army continue in the east and west of Zap, (…) three soldiers were killed as a result of the operations of our forces,” the HPG reported in a statement collected this Thursday by the Agency of Hawaii News.
These attacks have occurred in response to the continuous operations of the Turkish Army in the region, which in mid-April 2022 began a new offensive against the PKK in Iraqi Kurdistan, which Baghdad described as a “security threat national”, since the operations were not being coordinated.
The Turkish army has also frequently carried out military operations against the PKK and its allies in northern Syria — mainly the Syrian Kurdish militia People’s Protection Units (YPG) — since the ceasefire between the government and the group was broken. armed in July 2015.
The PKK has been listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
