The AMD Ryzen 9000 raises the ante for gamers. We have new Zen 5 architecture and, of course, some AI

AMD is making its debut. The Computex 2024 fair has been the scene of the launch of the promising AMD Ryzen AI 300 as well as the new ones AMD Ryzen 9000the desktop processors that according to the manufacturer are the most powerful in the world.

They certainly have the cards to fulfill that promise. We are facing a new generation of chips that have gamers as their absolute focus, but that also integrate increasingly interesting options for the field of artificial intelligence.

The notable novelty of the AMD Ryzen 9000 is the arrival of the new Zen 5 microarchitecture, which is intended to improve per-core performance. To do this, it provides techniques that improve latency and the prediction of execution branches with greater throughput and also greater parallelism to take advantage of multicore processes.

According to AMD, this doubles the bandwidth of certain types of instructions, of the data that travels between the caches and of another important element: the execution of artificial intelligence operations, although obviously we are not dealing with a chip specifically dedicated to it. Even so, these new functions add up and help if we run local AI models on our PC.

The performance improvement compared to previous generation Zen 4 chips is according to AMD. 16% on averagealthough it varies according to internal tests between 10% improvement in ‘Far Cry 6’ and 23% in Blender.

The star member of the family is the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, a processor with 16 cores and 32 execution threads and a working frequency that can reach 5.7 GHz. The L2+L3 cache totals 80 MB of capacity, and the TDP is 170W.

Internal tests that compare this chip with the Intel Core i9 14900K reveal that it is up to 56% more powerful in productivity and content production and up to 23% in games. The averages are around 25% and 13% in gaming, respectively.

Along with these processors come the AMD X870 and X870E chipsets which have standard support for USB 4.0 ports, PCIe Gen 5 graphics and NVMe for storage drives. The AM5 socket is still the one used on these boards, which will make them compatible with the Ryzen 7000, for example.

Along with this family AMD has unveiled the new Ryzen 9 5900XT and Ryzen 7 5800 XT, more modest processors (105 W TDP) but also designed for gamers and creators. Even so, the 5900XT stands out for its 16 cores and 32 execution threads, which will certainly put the Intel Core i7-13700K in trouble.
